Kubis is holding a series of consultations with German officials and the foreign ministers of Norway, Spain and Libya's neighboring countries to support the new authority in the country.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, March 20, 2021 (LANA) - Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubis, concluded his two-day visit to Berlin, during which he met with high-ranking German officials and continued his contacts with a number of foreign ministers aimed at strengthening the international community's support for Libya, including support for the new interim executive authority.
The statement, which was published by the mission on its official website, added that Kubis expressed his great appreciation to the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the German government for their strong and continuous support for the Libyans in their quest for peace, unity, stability, sovereignty and prosperity, through the Berlin Conference on Libya last year and the next Berlin process, with a right vision.
The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya urged “the parties with whom the consultations held and all member states of the United Nations, to fulfill their commitments made during the Berlin conference and agreed on the need to expedite the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, including the withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces, and respect the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations and pledged to support the new executive authorities, expressing their expectations that the new authorities will intensify their efforts to provide basic services and support to the Libyan people, unify state institutions, lay the foundations for comprehensive national reconciliation, and ensure the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement”.
The statement stated that “the parties urged the Libyan authorities and institutions to take all legal and other steps necessary to enable the holding of national elections on December 24, 2021, as stipulated in the roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum,” calling on “all leaders to fulfill their obligations and respond to the desires and expectations of the Libyan people strongly support holding the elections in December 2021”.
They affirmed "the unified position of the international community in support of the roadmap leading to the elections." According to the statement
The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Libya “thanked Germany and all international partners and regional actors, including the African Union, the European Union and the League of Arab States, for having lined up well in support of the positive progress that is taking place in Libya.”
In the same context, the statement stated that "the special envoy held a series of meetings with foreign ministers," explaining that "this is a continuation of his consultations with international partners to strengthen the current international alignment towards Libya."
The statement indicated that “Kubis held separate virtual meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway, En Marie Eriksen Sureid, and with the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Spain, Christina Gallach, and after his recent visit to Egypt, the Special Envoy discussed the Libyan file in phone calls with the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Osman Grandi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Morocco, Nasser Bourita, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria, Sabri Boukadoum.
