EU: Granting confidence to the national unity government will provide the conditions for reuniting Libyan institutions and leading the country towards the next elections.

Brussels, March 12, 2021 (LANA) - The European Union welcomed the National Unity Government headed by Abdel Hamid Dbaiba to the confidence of the House of Representatives, describing what happened as an important achievement that creates conditions for reuniting institutions in Libya and leading the country to the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December 24th.

In the statement issued yesterday in Brussels, the European Union urged "all Libyan stakeholders to ensure a timely and smooth transfer of power to the national unity government." "This is a historic opportunity for the Libyans to rally in a joint effort to rebuild their safe, stable and united country and restore Libyan national sovereignty".

In the same statement, the European Union stressed the need for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached on October 23rd in Geneva, calling for sanctions to be imposed on anyone who violates the agreement.

The statement added, "We strongly encourage the House of Representatives to continue on its constructive role and work jointly with the Government of National Unity and the High National Elections Commission to ensure timely preparations for the elections."
