IOM: Libya Returned 1500 Asylum Seekers From High Seas in a Week.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 9 February 2021(Lana) The International Organisation of Migration IOM said Libya has returned 1500 asylum seekers from the Sea last week.
IOM tweeted ‘1487 asylum seekers have been returned from the Sea to Libya between 2-8 February this year.’
In information supported by a diagram, IOM said a total of 1956 including women and children have been returned since the beginning of the year.
20 asylum seekers have drowned in the Sea while 67 were unaccounted for, the organization said.
In pointed out that in 2020 the Coast Guard has returned 11891 asylum seekers to Libya, as 381 died and 597 unaccounted for.
Due to internal unrest in Libya, the country has become in the last years a key transit point to Europe for asylum seekers fleeing poverty and conflict in their countries.
