Commissioner of the African Union Peace and Security Commission: Libyan Parties Should Avoid Engagement in Parallel Meetings.
Pulbished on:Tripoli, 4 February 2021(Lana) The Commissioner of the African Union Peace and Security Commission Smaїl Chergui urged Libyan parties to the conflict to concentrate on forming the executive authority, and not to stray off the UN-led track.
In an interview with the Algerian state-run TV channel, that coincided with the voting on candidates to the Libyan Presidency Council under the UN auspices in Geneva, Chergui said announcement by Libyan personalities to run for the Presidency Council was good and positive development, and we are following what’s going on in Geneva to be on a solid ground on who will represent Libyans.
The AU official said the current phase required all parties to avoid engagement in parallel meetings, which may suggest to some they were forsaking the UN-led track, explaining that the Libyan crisis has lasted for too long and that attention should be put on preparing for the next elections for a new start in the Arab country.
