European statement reaffirms standing by the vast majority of Libyans who reject the status quo, the military option, and oppose all foreign interventions

  Tripoli, 20 January, 2021 (Lana) - The European Union delegation welcomed the approval of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum of a mechanism for selecting a new unified executive authority for the entire country.

In a joint statement with the diplomatic missions of the European Union member states in Libya, the mission stressed that the decision taken at the Dialogue Forum is important to pave the ground for what the Libyan people deserve, represented by a unified transitional government that works to restore basic public services and prepare the country for the national elections that will be held on 24 December 2021.

 The statement expressed hope that the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum would now move quickly to nominate a new executive authority based on the agreed mechanism, expressing its encouragement for the meaningful and full inclusion of women in establishing peace, and its support for their active political participation in all aspects of the peace process and future governance. in Libya.

The statement reaffirmed the responsibility of the main stakeholders in Libya to move forward towards stabilizing the country and work for the common interest of all Libyans, calling on all Libyan leaders to seize this opportunity in a consensual spirit to find a sustainable peaceful solution.

The statement stressed that Libya needs to take urgent decisions to reinforce the ceasefire, achieve stability, restart the economy, restore public services, and improve the living conditions of the Libyan people.

The European statement concluded by saying, “We stand today, more than ever, with the vast majority of Libyans who reject the status quo and reject any military or violent option to settle the crisis and eliminate terrorism, and we share their opposition to all foreign interventions, and we support their willingness to work hand in hand.
