Tripoli, May 21, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced the launch of a new training program, "Basirah," aimed at strengthening the professional capacities of Libyan media professionals, starting today, Wednesday.

The mission explained that the program will begin with a digital workshop led by Pamela Kesrouani, a teaching fellow at the Google News Initiative in the Middle East and North Africa. The program will focus on how journalists can use artificial intelligence to improve the quality of their reporting and research.

The mission added that, over the next two months, the program will feature prominent international experts from institutions such as Cambridge University, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and others. They will discuss topics including the impact of artificial intelligence on politics and democracy, technical tools to improve news verification, methods of media manipulation in times of war, and how to protect yourself from online harassment.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hannah Tetteh, noted that journalists play a pivotal role in stabilizing Libya by raising public awareness, countering false news, and holding decision-makers accountable. She added that the Basirah program was designed to provide high-quality technical training that meets this vital need.
