Tunis 25 March 2023 (Lana) The UN Envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, said that if the legislative bodies fail to reach an agreement on electoral laws in a timely manner, we will look at what alternatives we will find, indicating he would not accept moves to obstruct the elections.

This came in an interview with Reuters published on Friday.

"They have to deliver on this in a timely manner, if they don't do it, they will be accountable to the Libyan people, to the international community, and to the regional leaders who are supporting them in this process," he said.

Reuters said that when asked what alternatives he was considering if they did not reach an agreement, Bathily said, "We will talk about that when the time comes.

Reuters pointed out that Bathily admitted that many Libyans have shown their scepticism about the capacity or goodwill of the House of Representatives and High Council of State to deliver on their mandate, adding that "this cannot be just another twist in the musical chairs".
