Teachers continue their strike in schools in Sirte for the ninth consecutive day.

Pulbished on:

Sirte, 19 March 2023 (Lana) For the ninth consecutive day, teachers staged a sit-in in more than 35 primary education schools within the municipality of Sirte, in protest against lack of decision regarding their employment status. Most basic education schools closed their doors to students on the tenth of March, due to failure by the Sirte Education Directorate and the Ministry of Education to implement the demands of teachers to grant them their promotions and late financial dues. The sit-in teachers confirmed in separate statements on Sunday, they would continue the sit-in and cessation of teaching until their demands are met and the job and financial conditions of all faculty members are settled without exclusion or discrimination.

For its part, the sit-in coordination committee formed by teachers issued a statement calling for an investigation into the monitoring of Sirte's education amid accusations of administrative corruption, dismissal of former head of the teachers' syndicate, and the appointment of a new head of the syndicate to serve them and guarantee their financial and administrative rights.

The sit-in came against the backdrop of a decision issued by the Sirte Education Director in early March to settle the employment and financial status of 1,200 teachers within the educational staff of the directorate, but it met with resentment and rejection from teachers who were not included in the decision. According to the protesting teachers, the decision included the names of teachers who dropped out of work and others who were appointed recently, while it did not include teachers who spent more than thirty years in the teaching profession and whose job status they were appointed have not changed.

On the third day of the sit-in, the Minister of Education in the Government of National Unity, Moussa Al Magariaf, issued a decision to settle the employment status of 52 teachers affiliated with the Education Directorate in Sirte, and pledged to form a committee to list the names of teachers who deserve promotions and solve their woes as soon as possible.
