Al-Dbaiba rejects call to change government and HNEC

Pulbished on:

Al-Khums, March 09, 2023 (LANA) - Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid al-Dbaiba, expressed, on Thursday, his rejection of any attempt or call to change the government and the administration of the High National Elections Commission, claiming that changing these two institutions is a guarantee for holding elections.

In his speech during the third ministerial meeting for 2023, Al-Dbaiba described that call as a “funny thing”, and said that the owner of this “miserable maneuver” remained in power in spite of the Libyan people for a long time without elections, renewal or accountability.

The prime minister considered that those who call for a change in the management of the High Elections Commission and the government ignore that they are the ones who are the most prepared and committed to the electoral process, according to the testimony of the international community itself.

Al-Dbaiba renewed his government's commitment to conduct elections, and said that it provided all support to the High Electoral Commission, and asked the United Nations to enhance the level of coordination in Libya and readiness to conduct the electoral process.

The prime minister affirmed that the elections will be held in accordance with the vision of the UN envoy and what he presented to the Security Council, and that he supports peaceful change in Libya without political deals or circumventing the will of the Libyans.

The head of the High Council of State, Khaled Al-Mishri, called in a press conference last Monday, to change HNEC board of directors for the possibility of holding elections, after the formation of a mini unified government that would supervise the elections.

Al-Mishri demanded, Prime Minister Abdel Hamid al-Dbaiba, not to run for the upcoming elections and to respect his pledge to do so, stressing that no electoral laws would be accepted except by agreement between the State Council and the House of Representatives.
