Tripoli, 31 August 2022 (Lana)  United Nations Support Mission in Libya "UNSMIL" called on authorities in Libya to address widespread enforced disappearances as a part of a rights-based national reconciliation process stressing that the families have the right to know the fate of their loved ones and the right to justice.

'UNSMIL' said in a statement published yesterday on its SMS Page, on the occasion of the International Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances ,that it had documented disappearances of perceived political opponents, politically active women and men, human rights defenders, members of parliament ,lawyers ,and judges ,as well as migrants and asylum seekers, the whereabouts of thousands of women, men and children remain unknown over the years ,others have been illegally detained and later released ,while the dead bodies of other missing and disappeared people have been found in locations throughout Libya, including in mass graves.

The Acting Head of the Mission said that the Mission reiterated that the enforce disappearance for any person even if he is released ,is consider to be a serious violation of the International Human Rights and the Humanitarian Law ,and may amount to a crime against humanity.

The lack of truth and justice for the missing people form a serious human rights concern, therefore all enforced disappearances must be investigated and perpetrators brought to justice.

The UNSMIL called on Libya , With the spread of impunity for enforced disappearances in Libya , to adopt the 2010 International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance as an indication of its commitment to  address this widespread violation.

The mission stressed the need to set a national comprehensive strategy ,involving the victims and human rights organizations ,to address this scourge ,and a strategy should include measures to identify all illegal detention facilities and close them ,as well as a national mechanism to respond and prevent enforced disappearances and provide redress to victims and their families.
