President of Chad: 90 million dollars worth of gold: Smuggled from Chad to Libya weekly.

Pulbished on:

Washington, 11 June 2022 (Lana) Chad's Head of Interim Transitional Council Mohamed Idriss Deby said that "gold worth more than 57 billion CFA francs, 90 million dollars was being smuggled from Chad across the border with Libya every week."

In remarks broadcast on the state-run Tele Chad radio, Deby stressed the need to stop this, saying during a visit to Corey Bogudi, a northern town, where at least 100 small-scale miners were killed in clashes over gold last month: "This is huge and must stop."

Chad's official gold exports in 2020 amounted to about $200, a Bloomberg correspondent said quoting World Bank data.

The reporter said Deby was looking to take advantage of gold mines in the far north of Chad, specifically the border area between Libya, Chad and Niger, in Kori Bogoudi, which is controlled by armed militias, where lawlessness and bloody clashes are escalating, Bloomberg said. A few days ago, the head of Chad's Transitional Military Council announced the evacuation from the border areas with Libya in the Tebsti state of all illegal gold explorations, with the establishment of two military bases on the area to restore stability.
