Tripoli, May 20, 2022 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya announced yesterday the continuation of the consultations of the Libyan Constitutional Track Committee - consisting of the House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

The Italian Nova news agency quoted the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, Stephanie Williams, as saying that the goal is to reach, by Friday, a consensual formula to reach the presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

"Nova" also quoted Libyan sources as saying, "It will not be easy to reach an agreement," adding that moving matters would require a miracle. The most likely scenario is that the two delegations agree on basic principles and then get the green light from their parliaments, prolonging time and undermining the confidence-building process.”

The sources added that if Williams was able to also find consensus on the election law, especially on the eligibility criteria for the next president, “the elections can be held by the end of the year,” but time is running out, as the roadmap for the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, which was established, is scheduled to expire. Under the terms of the temporary institutions established in Tripoli, namely the National Unity Government and the Presidential Council, on June 22nd.

The sources cautioned that perhaps nothing important will happen in the next few weeks, as well as on June 22, according to what Nova published on its website.
