Tripoli, 25 January 2022 (Lana) Britain has stressed the need to address the challenges that prevented Libyan elections from being held on December 24, 2021, and to maintain the momentum achieved in this regard, stressing its support by the UN Support Mission in Libya to combine political, economic and military tracks to support stability and unity of the country.

 Ambassador James Karaoke, British deputy delegate to the UN said in remarks before the UN Security Council, at meeting on Libya on Monday, which was published by the UK mission to the United Nations on its website. "Libya is at a critical juncture, and the delay in the elections scheduled for last December has been disappointing. ‘We must maintain momentum," he said, reiterating Britain's full support for the UN-facilitated, Libyan-led political process.

"Successful free, fair and comprehensive elections will remain a decisive step in this process," Karaoke said, adding that "the Libyan people have made clear of their aspirations to have a say in who governs them."

 In his speech, the British deputy delegate explained that to move forward and avoid continued delays and uncertainty in Libya it is necessary to address the challenges that prevented the elections in December," stressing the importance of continuing to "support the work of the UN support mission in Libya to combine political, security and economic tracks to support Libya's stability, sovereignty and national unity." "That's why we proposed a draft resolution to renew the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya," he said.
