Ageela Saleh calls for committee to be set up from outside the two chambers to amend some articles of the draft constitution.

Tobruk, 24 January 2022 (Lana) Speaker of the House of Representatives Ageela Saleh called on Monday to form a committee of experts and jurists to amend some articles of the draft constitution from outside the House of Representatives and the High Council of State.

Any constitution drafting committee made up of members of both houses will be doomed to failure, because these committees have lasted for years and have reached nothing," Saleh said in an intervention during a meeting held by the House of Representatives today.

Saleh called on members to agree with the High Council of State to select specialized technical experts to draft the technical language to amend certain articles in the draft constitution, not the constitution in its entirety. He stressed that the amendment to the draft constitution would not take long, expecting not to exceed a maximum of three weeks, because it included six or seven articles, and then put to a referendum by the Libyan people to say their word.

With regard to the elections, the speaker of the House of Representatives stressed the need to set an "inevitable" date when elections will be held, to get the country out of the transitional stages. Ageela Saleh called on lawmakers not to make press statements and talk outside the chamber, while calling on government and private channels to stay away from hate speech and sedition by hosting some controversial figures.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives expressed hope that the High Council of State will play a key role in the process of national reconciliation, pointing out that reconciliation is one of the tasks of the Presidential Council, but unfortunately the Council has not yet done this duty, saying: We must all be one hand to serve the interests of Libya.
