Italian concern about the presence of “non-state actors” in the African Sahel region.

Rome, January 14, 2022 (LANA) - Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini said that the presence of non-state actors is acquiring an increasingly worrying significance in the African Sahel region, as the international community increases its military commitment to training local forces, referring to the presence of The Russian Wagner Group elements in Mali to support the Transitional Military Council, the Italian (AKI) news agency reported today.

    Addressing via video link to the meeting of European Defense Ministers yesterday in the city of Brest, Guerini stressed that these conditions must be taken into account already at the planning stage, and at the same time, improving strategic communication to enhance targeted messages on the support measures we provide to Region’s countries ".

   Guerini said, as quoted by a memo from the Ministry of Defense, that initiatives such as those envisaged by the European Peace Facility can encourage the work of the European Union missions through greater support for countries in crisis.
